Notably missing from the Army Corps scope of review is mountaintop removal and global warming. While I have respect for their review I believe they made a mistake when they chose to leave out leveling of the oldest mountains in the world in and around impoverished communities and the unpredictable changing of climate across the globe. But, who knows, maybe that’s just me.

Highlights from the article:

“The massive $6 billion monstrosity would abut their property, tower over the tiny town, belch out millions of tons of carbon dioxide, lead and mercury every year, and cast a giant, toxic shadow over the whole of Hampton Roads.”

“But the Army Corps of Engineers — which must first approve any plans to destroy and build on protected wetlands like those at the plant site — said last week it’ll consider “alternatives and the public interest” as it draws up its draft environmental impact statement by next summer.”
