Dear Friends
Thanks again to everyone who was able to attend the public hearing in Surry County last month to speak against Old Dominion Electric Cooperative’s plans to build the largest coal-fired power plant in Virginia.
I am contacting you again to remind you about Monday’s important Planning Commission meeting.
This Monday, December 14, the Surry County Planning Commission will meet again and possibly vote on whether to recommend granting zoning approval for the plant. Although the commission has stopped taking public comments, it is still critical that concerned citizens show up in force to keep the pressure on until they make their final decision.

Even though there will be no formal public hearing, your presence will send the message loud and clear – “We can do better than another dirty coal plant to meet our budget and our future energy needs!” Click here to RSVP so that we know to expect you.
The proposed plant would emit hundreds of thousands of tons of smog and soot into the air every year, pollution that causes or worsens heart and lung diseases like asthma. Located only a few miles from one of the Commonwealth’s greatest treasures, the Chesapeake Bay, it would also poison surrounding waterways with mercury. The plant would create nearly 60 tons of poisonous coal ash a day, to be landfilled in Surry County. In addition, it would add nearly 15 million tons of global warming pollution to the atmosphere every year.
Please bring your friends and family. The meeting will be held at the same location, in the town of Surry at 7:00 pm, Monday, December 14.
