This week you have an important opportunity to show your opposition to the huge coal-fired power plant proposed for Hampton Roads. On February 4th, the Surry County Board of Supervisors will hold its public hearing on the proposed Old Dominion Electric Co-operative (ODEC) plant, which would be the largest coal plant in Virginia and the most costly plant proposed in the U.S.! This plant will spew thousands of tons of toxic and smog-causing pollutants into the air and jeopardize water quality with a huge on-site landfill to store toxic coal ash.
The hearing will begin at 7pm and is being held at:
Surry County Government Center
45 School St.,
Surry, Virginia 23833
(Click for map)
Please show up early to ensure that you get a seat! (Some folks are arriving at 5pm, so dress warmly)
Before ODEC can complete its application for an air pollution permit, it must receive zoning approval from both Surry County and the town of Dendron, where the plant would be located. Both localities will be holding public hearings on this issue next week. However, the Feb. 4 Surry County hearing, which will be held in a larger room, is the best optionfor residents living outside the region. At this meeting, citizens will have an opportunity to voice all their concerns about how the plant would affect their lives.
Hope to see you there!
