Location: Mt. Vernon Unitarian Church
1901 Windmill Lane
Alexandria, VAA Virginia rural electric utility has released plans to spend $6 billion on a new coal-fired power plant just 32 miles from the Chesapeake Bay. Because this utility is cooperative, a board elected by the ratepayers will make the final decision about any new plant. We believe that Virginians south of us don’t want to invest in expensive, dirty energy any more than we do, but we need to get on the phone to educate our neighbors in Virginia’s rural electric coops that they have a choice about their board members and a choice about our energy future.
Through Interfaith Power & Light, congregations across Northern Virginia are hosting community phone banks this summer. At these phone banks, caring volunteers from area congregations, from Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and from the Sierra Club will be joining together to mobilize our neighbors to help end plans for this dirty, dangerous, and expensive coal plant.
It’s not every day that you can participate in a grassroots effort to stop a new coal plant — join us!
Training and snacks will be provided. Please plan to bring a cell phone if you can.
