SAMS currently has three major goals: to win permanent dust control to protect residents’ health and quality of life in coal-producing communities, to prevent the approval of the proposed Ison Rock Ridge permit, a 1,200-acre surface coal mine that would destroy 5 communities if approved, and to win national legislation that would put an end to mountaintop removal coal mining.
In tandem with the campaigns are several new programs that have been created to meet the demands of the growing membership base. Some of our recently-developed initiatives include: Sustainable Economic Development, Water Monitoring, Health Project, Story Collecting, Youth Organizing, and Leadership Development. These programs have allowed the organization to expand its work to fulfill the portion of the mission statement “to help rebuild sustainable communities.”
