The Coalfields Expressway is a massive surface mining operation masquerading as a highway project that would allow coal companies to seize private land along the route for coal extraction and ignore some environmental protections for local communities. The Commonwealth Transportation Board, the governing board of VDOT, is inviting us to comment on their Six-Year Plan, which includes funding for the Coalfields Expressway. We must tell VDOT that this project mustn’t move forward before we can ensure that it is a beneficial investment of tax dollars that will actually deliver economic benefits to the region and that the environmental assessments of the project are thorough to protect the health and resources of the surrounding communities.
